By season
Summer
The warmest months and the longest days: the busiest time for beaches, lakes and walking tracks.
North Island
- Islands, beaches and boat trips in the Bay of Islands
- The Tongariro Alpine Crossing in its main walking season
- Hot pools, lakes and forest walks in Rotorua
- The ferry from Auckland to Waiheke Island's beaches and vineyards
South Island
- Sea kayaking from Kaiteriteri into Abel Tasman National Park
- Lupins at Lake Tekapo until about the end of December
- Long, light evenings by the lakes in Wanaka and Queenstown
- Cruises on Milford Sound
What to wear
Light, breathable clothes, a sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Bring a warm layer and a waterproof jacket: evenings by the lakes and days in the mountains can be cool, even in summer.
Comfortable walking shoes, and swimwear for beaches and hot pools.
Good to know
- This is the busiest season. New Zealand's own summer holidays run from Christmas to late January, so book places to stay early.
- The sun is strong. Wear sunscreen and a hat, even on cloudy days.
- Around Christmas the sun sets after 9 pm in Queenstown, so days out can be long.
