Education

Long-term study and pathways

A year or more at a New Zealand school, with a plan for the next step.

  • Four friends standing together among golden autumn trees
  • Students studying together in a tiered lecture theatre

Who it is for

Families thinking about full-time study in New Zealand, at primary, intermediate or secondary school, and students planning the step to university or other tertiary study.

How New Zealand schools are organised

  • Primary school: Years 1 to 8, about ages 5 to 12
  • Intermediate school, in some areas: Years 7 and 8, about ages 11 to 13
  • Secondary school: Years 9 to 13, about ages 13 to 18, where students work towards NCEA Levels 1 to 3
  • Tertiary study from about 18: universities, institutes of technology and private training establishments

How we help

We listen first: the student's age, English, interests and goals. Then we look at schools and pathways that fit, and help with enrolment, accommodation and settling in.

The student visa

Study of more than three months needs a student visa, and the application needs an offer of enrolment from an approved school or institution. Emma Song, our Licensed Immigration Adviser, can advise on the visa.
