Spring
Warmer days, gardens in flower and lambs in the fields, with snow still on the high peaks.
North Island
- Spring gardens in Auckland and at Hamilton Gardens
- Lambs on the green farmland of the Waikato, around Hobbiton
- Rotorua's lakes and forests before the summer crowds
South Island
- Cherry blossom in Christchurch's Hagley Park in late September and October
- Lupins around Lake Tekapo from about mid-November
- Spring skiing in September
- Waterfalls running high in Fiordland after spring rain
What to wear
Layers again, because the weather changes quickly. A warm jumper or fleece, a waterproof jacket, and a hat and sunscreen: the sun is already strong.
Waterproof walking shoes.
Good to know
- Spring weather changes fast. In the south you can have sun, rain and even snow in one day.
- Daylight saving starts on the last Sunday in September, and the evenings get longer.
- Some walks on farmland close for lambing. For example, the Roys Peak Track at Wanaka is closed from 1 October to 10 November.
